This paper reports the anatomopathological, bacteriological and serological findings collected in 104 necropsied culled pigs of 70-90 days of age from 4 Italian farms that do not have any vaccination program for atrophic rhinitis. None of the necropsied pigs had normal turbinates and the prevalence of lesions due to atrophic rhinitis in these farms ranged from 31 to 72%. Bordetella bronchiseptica was isolated in 16-84% of the cases while the toxigenic strain of Pasteurella multocida type D was isolated in only one case. This suggests that B. bronchiseptica had a primary role in determining the atrophic lesions of the turbinates in these pigs. Even if no lesions due to atrophic rhinitis were observed in growing and fattening pigs (progressive form of the disease) damages due to the regressive form of the disease, and in particular to B. bronchiseptica, should not be underestimated.
