Quantification of the spread of Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae in nursery pigs using transmission experiments.

This transmission experiment was designed to quantify the spread of Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae by means of a reproduction ratio (Rn) during the nursery period. Forty-eight piglets aged 4 weeks were distributed into 6 pens of two types: in each pen, 6 susceptible contact piglets were housed with two piglets previously inoculated with either a highly or a low virulent isolate of M. hyopneumoniae. Piglets were clinically and serologically monitored for a period of 6 weeks and then euthanized. Lungs from each piglet were investigated for pneumonic lesions, submitted to immunofluorescence, histopathology and bacteriological examination. In addition, nPCR on bronchoalveolar lavage fluids was used to detect the presence of M. hyopneumoniae. Although the Rn value of the highly virulent M. hyopneumoniae pens resulted higher than that of the low virulent M. hyopneumoniae, the difference was not statistically significant. The mean Rn value was 1.16 meaning that one animal infected before the nursery period will infect on average one penmate during the nursery period.
