PMWS-Circovirus-PDNS

LAVAL A
Le mycoplasme vecteur de gravité pour la MAP [Mycoplasma enhances the severity of PMWS].
Porc Magazine, January 2005, N°384, 58-60

Following a brief review of the main features of PMWS, the role of infectious cofactors such as Parvovirus, PRRSV and Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae in the clinical expression of the disease is underlined. On the other hand, several authors have clearly demonstrated that an immune stimulation through early vaccination in young piglets can be a triggering factor for PMWS. The role of adjuvants has been investigated and aluminum hydroxyde adjuvants were demonstrated safer than oil-in-water adjuvants which clearly potentiate the effects of PCV2. The timing of vaccination is also important and the more appropiate schedule seems to be to vaccinate 4 to 2 weeks before the presumed timing of infection. Vaccination against Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae is crucial for the control of respiratory diseases in pigs and allow to maintain good herd performance. However, it induces an immune stimulation and doing so it may enhance the pathogenic effect of PCV2. Nevertheless this potential negative effect may occur more often in herds with low health status.
