Cell-mediated immunity in infectious diseases.
Allen D. Leman Swine Conference – Proceedings, 2004: 80-83
So far humoral immunity was the key of the evaluation of immune responses in domestic animals. However in many cases, serum antibody titers give only a partial view of the level and type of protection induced by vaccination: some specific antibodies may not be protective against the infectious agent, antibodies may help pathogens to enter host cells through phagocytosis or form immune complexes with antigens and trigger immune complex-associated diseases, antibodies may not be detectable in animals fully resistant to challenge. Thus a reliable evaluation of vaccine efficacy requires the evaluation of cell-mediated immunity over time. The various means available to assess lymphocyte activation and cytokine secretion following vaccination are described.
