Search for viral triggers on a PMWS affected farm.
International Conference on Animal Circoviruses and Associated Diseases, European Society for Veterinary Virology, 2005
The objective of this study was to search for any factor triggering the pathogenic effect of porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2). In a farm affected by potweaning multisystemic wasting syndrome (PMWS), 50 conventionally reared piglets were identified at birth and observed until 12 weeks of age. Eight blood samples, tonsil and faeces swabs were collected at 10 day intervals and tested for virus isolation. Positive samples were tested with electron microscopy, extracted for PCR and tested for various porcine viruses. The results showed that the types and amounts of viruses and bacteria isolated were not unusual among pigs. Consequently, this study could not confirm that a virus served as a trigger for PMWS.
