Evidence of genetics influence on the expression of porcine circovirus disease (PCVD) in postweaning pigs.
International Conference on Animal Circoviruses and Associated Diseases, European Society for Veterinary Virology, 2005

The aim of this study was to investigate whether different genetic boar lines could be associated with general and porcine circovirus disease (PCVD) associated postweaning mortality. The study took place in two similar Spanish farms, free from porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) and from Aujeszky's disease virus. The selected sows had the same genetic background, while the boars involved were from three different genetic lines. All piglets born from these sows were placed in the same nursery farm. The mortality rate was monitored from 3 weeks to 21 weeks of age. Necropsy was carried out on all pigs that died during the postweaning period so as to determine the presence of porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2) and thus PCVD. The results showed that genetics may have a significant effect on postweaning PCVD.
