Classical swine fever in South Africa after 87 years' absence. [Letter]
The Veterinary Record, 2005, p 267
After being eradicated from South Africa in 1918, classical swine fever (CSF) reappeared in the country in June 2005. After suspecting bacterial and then viral diseases, CSF was then suspected. CSF virus (CSFV) was eventually identified by use of an ELISA test and reverse transcriptase-PCR, and then confirmed by virus isolation and monoclonal antibody typing. The virus was then showed to be of subtype 2.1. Further investigations are carried out to identify the source of the infection.
