Poultry, pig and the risk of BSE following the feed ban in France - A spatial analysis .

This study focused on the spatial heterogeneity of the risk of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) in France, just after the feed ban on meat and bone meal to cattle. Possible cross-contamination between monogastric and cattle feedstuff was assessed by analysing the data regarding 467 cases born after the feed ban (BAB). The disease mapping models were established according to three techniques: the Hierarchical Bayesian model, the Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) method and the Bayesian graphical modelling. The results showed that, unlike what was initially assumed, the poultry density in an area did not have a significant effect on the risk of BSE, which was not the case for pig density, as it was strongly associated with an increased risk, especially when the pigs to cattle ratio was high.
