Seasonal infertility associated with hot environments in pigs [correspondence].

This short communication takes up the conclusions of a study by PK Almond and G Bilkei on seasonal infertility in sows caused by high ambient temperatures. Above 35°C, reproductive performance get impaired and embryonic death may occur. The lack of a protective heat shock response in embryos from the two-cell stage until the post-blastocyst stage makes them particularly susceptible to maternal hyperthermia. Thus, attention should be paid to management of sows in order to provide them with suitable environmental temperatures and avoid heat-induced early embryonic death.
