eFeedLink report that China's piglet prices continued to lose more ground in the week ending Apr 20. Many hog raisers in China have incurred losses and quite a few have given up on raising hogs. Subsequently. in the major hog-producing regions, there is weak demand for piglets.

In the hog market, significant inventory build up is weighing on prices. Live hog prices continued to move lower during the week ending Apr 17. This was mainly due to high inventories in major hog production regions.

Imports' Stranglehold On UK Pig Market
Imports of pig meat are increasingly being sucked into Britain reports The Scotsman. Latest import figures from BPEX shows an increase of 35% since 2001 and more than 70% of the pork and pork products arriving are produced under animal welfare conditions now illegal in the UK, they report.
Pig Prices Creep Up As Market Tightens
Prices have started to harden despite the disruption to slaughtering during Easter, according to FWi. The DAPP at 100.13p/kg deadweight is languishing around the 100p threshold, but some spot buyers of bacon pigs have offered prices of up to 103p/kg. Most are still trading in the 100?102p/kg area.
Tallow Ban Will Add £10 A Carcass To Red Meat Costs
The British red meat industry is facing extra costs of £10 a carcass after Defra's decision to ban the use of animal tallow as fuel in rendering plants. Livestock farmers will shoulder most of the costs, according to FWi. The United Kingdom Renderers' Association said it would continue to appeal against the decision, estimating the industry will face a bill of £30m-£50m.

NFU president Peter Kendall met Tony Blair last Thursday to discuss the issues facing UK agriculture, including the fiasco surrounding the late delivery of the Single Farm Payment, concerns over the EU budget, imbalances in the food chain and the effect of bovine tuberculosis.

US Retail Pork Prices Declining
Glenn Grimes and Ron Plain report that live barrow and gilt weights dropped sharply in Iowa-Minnesota last week. According to the USDA, average live weights in Iowa-Minnesota dropped to 268.1 pounds for the week ending April 15. The prior weeks weight average was 270.2 pounds. If the weight decline did occur as reported, it indicates marketings became substantially more current last week, they say.
US Swine Economics Report
In his regular report on the US Swine industry, Ron Plain says that thus far, 2006 has been a real disappointment for hog producers. Rather than trending higher as prices normally do at the start of a year, they have moved lower. Current cash hog prices are $4 lower than at the start of 2006 and the June lean hog futures contract is trading $8 below its level of early January. The one bright spot for the U.S. hog industry is pork exports, he says.

The Canadian International Trade Tribunal (CITT) ruled yesterday that unprocessed U.S. grain corn imported into the country have not injured Canada's domestic corn industry. The $1.65 per bushel duty that had been imposed on the grain will be lifted immediately, and all provisional duties collected will be refunded.

Russia To Invest $9 Bln In Agriculture In WTO Accession Bid
Russia will spend $9 billion of its budget on developing agriculture as part of its bid to join the WTO, a deputy economic development and trade minister said Monday. But Maxim Medvedkov, Russia's top negotiator at the WTO talks, said Russian agriculture was still unlikely to be globally competitive in the next decade. "It is not realistic to speak about [competitiveness] in the next 5-10 years," he said.

Smithfield Foods Takes Stake In ACMC
Smithfield Foods Inc. - the world's largest integrated pig company - has taken an undisclosed equity stake in UK-based international pig-breeding company, ACMC Ltd. This move follows close co-operation between the two companies in major projects in Eastern Europe. In 2002 ACMC shipped 700 Great Grandparent (GGP) stock to establish a nucleus breeding herd in Poland with a production company called Prima Farms. This herd has been stocked to support 150,000 commercial sows. In 2004, 6,000 GGPs were exported to Romania to establish a 1,000-sow nucleus herd and a 5,000-sow multiplication farm, which has since been increased to 12,000 sows. This breeding programme can support 200,000 sows.
