Atrophic Rhinitis

See also chapter 9

(251) This is primarily a disease of the young growing pig but the mature sow can be a carrier of the organism in its nose and tonsils. The disease is caused by toxigenic Pasteurella multocida bacteria types A or D. The toxins damage the delicate lining of the nose of the piglet during the early growing period causing haemorrhage and distortion of the nose. If the breeding female has been infected early in life it could still show distortions of the face in adulthood. The infection rarely causes clinical disease in the mature animal and the only importance of disease in the dry sow is the sub-clinical carrier state that exists. The vaccination of breeding females is effective in reducing the carrier state and preventing establishment of infection in the young growing pig and thus removing clinical evidence of disease and the majority of its effects.
