Aujeszkys disease (AD) - Pseudorabies virus (PRV)

(252) See also chapter 12

This disease is caused by a herpes virus and when it is introduced into the breeding herd for the first time, abortions and respiratory signs can be seen. Those females that are in the first third of pregnancy may absorb foetuses resulting in delayed returns to oestrus, but if infection occurs in the second third or the last part of pregnancy piglets are often stillborn and mummified or weak pigs are evident at farrowing. Once the acute phase of the disease has passed a proportion of sows become carriers of the virus and shed it intermittently . Few clinical signs are then seen. Vaccination of the breeding stock is effective in preventing clinical disease.
