Porcine Parvovirus (PPV)

See chapter 6 for further information.

(282) This virus is ubiquitous and present in almost all sow populations. Once exposed the sow becomes immune. The virus itself has no clinical effects on the non pregnant when infection takes place. If however a sow or gilt is exposed for the first time in the first half of pregnancy the virus will cross the placenta and selectively kill off the developing foetuses in the womb. Good control is achieved by vaccinating the gilt.
