Enzootic Pneumonia (EP) - Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae
See also chapter 9(330) Clinical signs of enzootic pneumonia occur in the lactating sow only if the disease has been introduced into a fully susceptible herd for the first time. In such cases acute pneumonia may develop with severe respiratory embarrassment and sometimes high mortality. The breakdown of disease usually takes place over 6 to 8 weeks with sows coming into the farrowing house continuing to be affected. During this time it is advisable to inject all animals at the point of farrowing with long-acting OTC. For the treatment of acute pneumonia injections of either lincomycin or tiamulin are advised daily for 4 to 5 days. There is a widely held but erroneous belief that the sows and gilt will become carriers and pass this infection to their next litters. They may do so to their present litter when they are in the early acute stage of the disease and their piglets may cough but by the time they farrow again 4 to 5 months later most sows and gilts will have eliminated the infection and will provide a solid immunity to their piglets via colostrum. If weaning is at 3 to 4 weeks, subsequent litters are not likely to become infected until after weaning.
