Erysipelas
See chapter 7 for further information.(367) This disease is uncommon in the piglet because it is protected from infection by colostral immunity but it occasionally occurs in gilt litters and the only sign may be a good piglet found dead from septicaemia. The skin extremities are often blue and post-mortem examinations show minute haemorrhages in the drainage lymph glands, the liver and the kidneys. A laboratory diagnosis to demonstrate the organism is necessary to confirm disease. Treatment consists of injecting the whole litter with long-acting penicillin (sometimes piglets vomit when using procaine penicillin but this is not of any consequence). All breeding herds should be vaccinated for erysipelas.
