(372) Leptospira occasionally affect the sucking piglet, infection coming from the urine of rodents or the carrier pig. The main type involved is L icterohaemorrhagiae. Piglets become ill, inappetent with jaundice and blood in the urine. Severely infected pigs die. Leptospira are sensitive to oxytetracycline, penicillin and streptomycin antibiotics. The disease can also be spread to humans if infected urine makes contact with broken skin or mucous membranes.
