Swine Influenza (SI)

See chapter 6 for further information.

(384) It would be unusual to see any signs of swine flu in the sucking pig unless disease entered the herd for the first time. Colostrum prevents infection during the sucking period. SI is manifest by coughing and short periods of illness and secondary pneumonia. Usually no treatment is required unless the pneumonia is severe. Good nursing, increasing farrowing house temperatures and bedding are important during the acute period. The disease becomes active in the young growing pig and periodically in the sow as immunity rises and falls.
