Abscesses

See chapter 7 for further information.

(403) Abscesses commonly occur as a result of secondary infection following skin damage from trauma, fighting and tail biting. Tail bitten pigs should be removed immediately from the pen and given a long-acting antibiotic penicillin or OTC injection. Such pigs should not be sent for slaughter until the abscess has been lanced and drained as described in chapter 15 and antibiotic withdrawal periods satisfied.
