Clostridial Diseases

See chapter 7 for further information.

(413) Clostridial infections are relatively uncommon in growers and finishers but occur on some farms infrequently in the breeding herd. They are usually manifest either by gas gangrene of musculature or sudden death and the pig decomposes very quickly showing a distended abdomen. If an outbreak of sudden death occurs in good pigs, post mortem examinations should be carried out as soon as possible after death. Anthrax must also be considered as a possibility and veterinary advice sought.
