Leptospirosis

See chapter 6 for further information.

(430) Growing pigs are often exposed to different strains of leptospira from the urine of rats, mice or other animals and they respond with positive titres in the blood. Disease however is uncommon. When it does occur it usually takes the form of acute jaundice, haemorrhage and rapid death and is caused by Leptospira icterohaemorrhagiae. Remember this disease can be transmitted to people.
