Mange Mites (Sarcoptes scabiei)

This is caused by the tiny mite Sarcoptes scabiei which burrows into the skin. It completes its life cycle from egg to adult in this tissue. Its presence affects food conversion and daily gain, particularly if the weights of infection are heavy. The disease is characterised initially by tiny red pimples over the skin particularly the back and the flanks. In the chronic condition there are thick asbestos like scabs, mainly within the ears, often with slight bleeding evident. Irritation and rubbing are constant findings together with ear shaking. If the herd is known to be infected pay particular attention to the severity of the disease at the daily clinical examinations. It is a major loss of production and growth rate in growing pigs.
