Parasites

See chapter 11 for further information.

(437) In the weaned pig internal parasites are an uncommon problem unless the weaners are housed in continuously occupied straw based or bare concrete pens. In these circumstances coccidiosis could cause diarrhoea within 7 to 10 days of entry and strongyle infections (poor growth and sloppy faeces) within 3 to 4 weeks.

In the finisher pig if the housing is used on an all-in all-out basis and pens washed out, internal parasites cannot complete their life cycle. With the continual use of pens however ascarid infections, causing milk spot liver and coughing, may become established, but diarrhoea would be uncommon.
