Stomach hair worm (Trichostrongylus axei)
(503) This is another tiny strongyle worm which as the name implies is found in the stomach. It can only just be seen by the naked eye. It is not a common worm and is considered of low significance.The life cycle
This is direct and typical of the other strongyles. It takes 5-7 days for the larva to become infective and the prepatent period is around three weeks under ideal conditions. .
Clinical signs
On its own it would be unusual to get high enough numbers to cause problems but the worm is sometimes found in mixed infections with other worms.
Diagnosis
This is by recognising the typical strongyle egg in the faeces.
