Pneumocystis carinii

(517) This bacteria like parasite causes respiratory disease in pigs 3 to 6 weeks of age. It is not an important disease. It may be seen in conjunction with PRRS infection.

Clinical signs

Pigs may be affected with diarrhoea at 3 to 5 weeks of age. Pneumonia may also be evident.

Diagnosis

Post mortem examinations of lung tissues are required to look for stained organisms.

Treatment

  • There is no treatment
Management control and prevention
  • Consider general hygiene in farrowing houses and the control of PRRS if relevant.
