(576) Compared to ruminants swine are not easily poisoned by lead and lead poisoning is rare. A level of at least 30mg per day is required before any signs are seen. Lead acts on the central nervous system causing pain, grinding of the teeth, blindness, severe muscle twitching and incoordination. Kidney tissue is a good source for sampling and levels of more than 4ppm indicate poisoning.

Treatment

  • Calcium EDTA 1% solutions are used for treatments at a level of 110mg/kg
