Pigweed (Amaranthus)

(594) This is a characteristic clearly defined disease associated with the accumulation of oedema (fluid) around the kidneys. The signs start with trembling and an uncoordinated gait and pigs characteristically lie on their bellies. Acute kidney damage occurs usually within two to three days which in severe cases is followed by coma and death. The characteristic changes of fluid around the kidneys and history of access to the plant are diagnostic. There is no treatment and pigs should be removed immediately from the source.
