(652) A variety of chemical and non chemical compounds and organisms are added to diets to treat or prevent disease or to enhance growth.

They include:

  • Antibiotics and antibacterial compounds. (See chapter 4 Fig.4-9)
  • Parasecticides. (See chapter 4).
  • Growth promoters. (See chapter 4)
  • Probiotics.
The addition of such substances in most countries is strictly controlled by law and the actual medicines available and the dose levels allowed also vary.
