(750) The need for you to write down a policy statement and to make it available to all employees may or may not be compulsory but it is a good practice to do so.In its most basic form your policy statement can simply be that you:'undertake to do all that is reasonably practicable to ensure the health, safety and welfare of all employees, contractors and visitors'.
However, it should ideally also show your commitment to health and safety in that you have addressed all of your obligations under the prevailing legislation and have made your employees aware of theirs. An example of a policy statement is shown in Fig.17-4a.
In addition to the general policy statement you will need to adopt and possibly document policies on specific aspects of health and safety (Fig 17-4b). To further define these policies and the associated SSW's you will need to carry out risk assessments. Once defined these specific policies should be coupled with, or cross referenced to the SSW's.
