AUSTRALIA - Attempts by pork producers to stop the importation of pig meat from countries affected by Post-Weaning Multisystemic Wasting Syndrome (PMWS) have failed. The full bench of the Federal Court has upheld an appeal by the Director of Quarantine, opening the way for new pig meat import licences to be issued by the Government.
Australian Pork Limited (APL) had tried to establish that importing pig meat from PMWS-affected countries would introduce the disease here, and endanger Australia's quarantine status.
Lawyer for APL, Tom Brennan, says the decision is disappointing.
"The court has effectively acknowledged that there wasn't a firm scientific basis for this decision, has said that the director weighed inponderable things, engaged in speculation, but said well, that's legal," he said.
