Pork sales reach record levels

AUSTRALIA - It seems pork was the big winner at Christmas tables this year, with sales of hams reaching record levels.

The seasonal rush leading into Christmas pushed up consumption of fresh and cured pork products by two kilograms per head.

Analyst Charles McElhone says it shows people are eating more pork and it is a tougher competitor for the beef and lamb industries.

"We've seen that pork consumption for the first time has gone above the 23 kilos per capita mark in the final months of 2005," he said.

"When you compare it to only two years prior, is up by two kilos per head as its competitive position has improved against beef and lamb in particular."
