Germany Puts Swine Fever Controls in Place

GERMANY - The European Commission is to suspend the movement of all pigs and impose precautionary measures in the "Regierungs-bezirke" Arnsberg, Munster, and Dusseldorf, in North-Rhine Westphalia following a fresh outbreak of classical swine fever. The outbreak occurred on a farm in the municipality of Borken.

The control measures have been backed by an extraordinary meeting of the Standing Committee for the Food Chain and Animal Health, which was convened in the margins of a scheduled meeting of Chief Veterinary Officers. In addition to a complete suspension of all pig movement in the "Regierungsbezirke" Arnsberg, Munster, and Dusseldorf in North Rhine-Westphalia areas for at least 10 days, the preventive measures laid down in Directive 2001/89/EC are also being applied. The movement restrictions are subject to review.

A three-kilometer protection zone has been established around the outbreak area, and disease control measures, including culling and disinfection, are being applied by the German authorities in this zone.
