AUSTRALIA - Animal welfare advocates say a proposed code for the breeding of pigs does not go far enough to protect the animals from cruelty.Professor Peter Singer from the University of Melbourne says current laws allow producers to keep sows in stalls so small they cannot turn around for months at a time.
Professor Singer says the Federal Government is currently seeking public comment on the proposed code, which would keep pigs in the stalls for six weeks.
He says it is a small improvement, but it would still leave Australia lagging far behind other countries in limiting the use of stalls.
