Farmers, govt to talk about quarantine

AUSTRALIA - Farmers and bureaucrats will meet next month to work out their differences over the nation's quarantine rules.

The move follows a damning parliamentary report which attacked the handling of an outbreak of citrus canker by the Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service (AQIS).

There are also continuing concerns in some farming sectors, particularly the horticulture and pork industries, that quarantine restrictions will be reduced in a bid to allow imports into the country.

The National Farmers' Federation has organised the July 14 meeting, which will include some of the nation's peak commodity organisations, as well as federal Agriculture Minister Peter McGauran and AQIS.
