APL proposes changes to pig slaughter levy

AUSTRALIA - Australian Pork Limited’s 2006 Annual General Meeting, 22 November, 2006 in Melbourne resulted in some exciting outcomes which will assist APL and the Australian pig industry prepare for future challenges.

Ian Parish became a new APL Producer Director, while Kenneth Cameron was re-elected as an APL Producer Director. Ian Parish replaces Paul Higgins, who retired following a five year tenure on the APL Board. Kate Spargo, Rob van Barneveld and Kay Carey were ratified as APL Specialist Directors.

The removal of the split of APL’s levy funding between R&D and marketing, was also discussed and voted on and APL delegates passed the following resolutions:
  1. The removal of the split in the Pig Slaughter Levy – it will be recommended to the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry that the split in the Pig Slaughter Levy be removed so there is a single levy, with no change in the total levies payable.
  2. There be a three yearly review of the removal of the split in the Pig Slaughter Levy.

This proposal would result in a single ‘Industry’ levy of $2.35 per carcass and is purely a removal of the split between the R&D and Marketing levies. It does not constitute any change in the level of levy currently collected.

The removal of the split will enable a more flexible approach to how levies are spent, optimising the return on investment to the Australian pig industry.
