New viral strain kills more hogs in U.S.

CALIFORNIA - A new strain of the swine disease circovirus is killing a larger number of hogs in the United States and the industry is taking steps to combat the growing death toll, a leading veterinarian said.

"All swine herds in the world have circovirus and now there is concern maybe that there is another strain and that is why we're seeing a different clinical picture than what we have seen in the past," said Pam Zaabel, director of swine health information and research for the National Pork Board.

"The belief is that PCV2 has mutated and this strain causes more severe clinical signs than the previous strain that we had," Zaabel said in an interview on Thursday on the sidelines of a forum in Anaheim, California, attended by pork producers from across the country.
