Northern Ireland to lead European PMWS project

UK - A research project led by Queen’s University, Belfast, is to investigate porcine cirovirus diseases and seek a cure.

Co-ordinated by Dr Gordon Allan, of the veterinary sciences division of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development in Northern Ireland, and the department of veterinary sciences at Queen's, the ?3.7m EU-funded project involves 15 partners from eight different countries, including the US and Canada.

Porcine cirovirus diseases - notably PMWS - affect the pig's immune system and symptoms include a slower growth rate, lingering disease and immune system dysfunction.
