Why local pig farmers want imports banned

AUSTRALIA - A landmark court ruling could secure the future of the local pork industry by protecting it from imported pig diseases.

The Federal Court recently upheld an Australian Pork Limited lawsuit against the Federal Government, calling for it to immediately stop importing pig meat from countries affected by the crippling pig disease Post Weaning Multisystemic Wasting Syndrome, or PMWS.

This disease, which is not harmful to humans, is present in all but two pork-producing countries other than Australia, and has crippled the New Zealand industry in the 12 months since the country was contaminated.

Once infected with PMWS, up to 60 per cent of piglets in a herd will die before the age of six weeks.

Justice Murray Wilcox vindicated the concerns of Australia's 2300 pork producers that Australia's quarantine protocols were inadequate and there was an unacceptable risk of exotic disease outbreak.

According to Australian Pork Limited chairman Nigel Smith, Justice Wilcox agreed with APL's concerns adopting the Director of Quarantine's policy meant a PMWS outbreak within 10 years was a "virtual certainty".
