Pig farmers attempt to block pig imports

AUSTRALIA - The nation's pig farmers will attempt to stop 83 companies importing pork into Australia as the battle over the nation's quarantine system intensifies.

Australian Pork Ltd will take legal action against Australia's director of animal and plant quarantine, Joanna Hewitt, after she failed to revoke 83 import permits.

It follows a Federal Court ruling earlier this month that strongly criticised an import risk analysis that was used to underpin the approval of pig meat from a series of countries.

Justice Murray Wilcox said quarantine authorities had ignored warnings that the imports would effectively guarantee the disease post weaning systematic wasting syndrome (PMWS) would gain a foothold in Australia.

PMWS kills millions of piglets globally each year. Australia is one of the few nations free of the disease.

He issued orders banning any more permits under the import risk analysis, and blocked one company's permit to import.

Australian Pork Ltd (APL) argued 83 other permits, issued under the same import risk analysis, should also be revoked, but this move was rejected by Ms Hewitt.
