Exporting pig parts to the US

AUSTRALIA - Science fiction would have us believe that in the not too distant future, we’ll live and look younger for longer and be free from all manner of disease.

While that’s still some way off, the process of replacing organic bits with other organic bits isn’t. Xenotransplants are transplants between species. Transplants between pigs and humans have already been touted as an alternative to organ donation.

The pig heart valve for example is fast becoming the first choice over the artificial version as recipients don’t need to be on anti-coagulant drugs for the rest of their life.

But one concern with pig transplants has been the potential for the porcine endogenous retrovirus (PERV) to be transmitted along with the transplant. This would present a problem for the transplant recipient and also for those around them. But the evidence to support this has been mixed.

Ron Penn is the General Manager for the Pork Division of Linley Valley Meats. The WA company has created a niche market exporting pig heart valves to America for human transplant operations.

They were approached by an American company who had heard they breed a particular size of pig that's the preferred size heart valve for use in human heart valve replacement operations.
